It’s easy to get bogged down by life. Sometimes, the simplest thing will set you off and before you know it, you’re stuck in a negative rut that seems impossible to escape. If this is happening to you and you want to learn ways to stay positive no matter what happens, then read on!
I’ve compiled a list of practical and actionable ways that can help you develop new habits for feeling better on a daily basis. These are some ways that have worked for me personally over the years, as well as some of my favourite quotes that offer advice on how to be more positive.
Ways to stay positive
- Practice gratitude. This tip is so simple, but so often overlooked. Every day, write down a few things that you are grateful for. Studies have found that focusing on gratitude actually gives you a much bigger boost of happiness than anything else does.
- Cultivate your inner circle. When you’re feeling down, make it a goal to get together with a couple of close friends and vent about your problems. This will also help to boost your own spirits.
- Give yourself something to be grateful for in the morning. Find something or someone that you appreciate in your life, whether that’s something physical like your pets or a hobby like playing the piano. Say something positive to yourself before you go to bed.
- Get your mind out of the gutter. Notice your thoughts.

The power of positivity
Before you can be successful in life, you need to learn how to be successful at life, first. This includes feeling positive and believing in your own potential. This is where the art of positivity comes into play. Not believing in your own greatness is what prevents many people from seeing their full potential. They think that their current limitations are the reality and have absolutely no idea of what they are capable of.
What does it mean to be happy?
Personally, it’s a feeling of enthusiasm, curiosity, kindness, and gratitude. It’s this inner sense of happiness that motivates me to grow and create. – Dan Sullivan
Read The Success Principles. By Tony Robbins
When you focus on a few things, you can get really far and accomplish things that you never thought were possible. Get a copy of The Success Principles by Tony Robbins and start putting it into practice.
The books are filled with powerful tips and strategies on building new habits, breaking bad habits and overcoming fear. Some of his most famous books include The Four-Hour Work Week and Secret Power of Broke.
Be grateful for what you have.
- Be grateful for what you have in life. Think of what you would wish for if you were told you would never have it. Write it down, and then practice it every day. Be thankful for what you have; everything you have is what you need to make it through the day. Once you practice gratitude on a daily basis, you’ll automatically start to feel better, and feel more of a connection to the universe.
Change what you focus on.
It’s easy to get caught up in how awful everything in the world seems to be at the moment. It’s hard to get out of that rut and stay positive and upbeat. So, if you want to change that, start with the things that you can control. If you have a choice, make the decision to focus on what’s positive. Focus on everything that’s good and kind in your life.
Listen to your inner voice.
Maybe you’re thinking this isn’t even a “thing” and that you don’t even have an inner voice. You are completely right, but I promise it is there and it does exist. I was once told by a colleague that the “world is full of idiots.” Of course, this was said to me with a lot of sarcasm and a bit of aggression, but the truth is, that is exactly what it is. Take your time, think it over and choose your words wisely. Ask yourself, are my words going to encourage or dissuade someone who is going through a tough time? Does my opinion or opinionated outburst make them feel empowered or weak? Once you have done your best to listen to your inner voice, you can be confident that no matter how bad your life is, you can choose to remain optimistic.

Choose a mantra that speaks to you:
Meditation and mantras
Meditation is a powerful tool to have in your toolbox for staying positive, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a fancy gadget or get out of your comfort zone to practice. Many people choose mantras, which are short statements of affirmations or positive messages that you repeat in your mind before going to sleep or before you get started on your day. You can also chant in your head, which is similar to simply repeating a sentence with a silly or personal twist to it. During this type of meditation, you often don’t hold your breath or think hard about anything. It’s usually more of a relaxation and a reminder to stay present in the moment.
